Which Gold IRA Company Is Best?

The best gold IRA company is the one that answers three questions in the open: what the whole purchase costs, what it would buy back the exact metals for the same day, and what support follows through years of ownership. Augusta Precious Metals is built for the saver who wants those answers explained one-on-one before any purchase, with each account fee named by the party that charges it.

Ratings, awards and low annual fees each describe one piece of a company. Those three answers describe the round trip, from your purchase through ownership to an eventual sale.

What should a gold IRA company answer before you choose it?

Before you choose a gold IRA company, ask it for the whole cost of the purchase and for what it would pay for those exact metals on the same day. Then ask what support and buyback process will be there through years of ownership. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission’s Customer Advisory: 10 Things to Ask Before Buying Physical Gold, Silver, or Other Metals pushes on the same point: ask what you would receive if you sold the metal back tomorrow.

Augusta Precious Metals believes every provider, Augusta included, should be asked those questions.

Why the same-day bid? A coin or bar’s price is only half the comparison. The spread is the difference between the price you pay when purchasing the metals and the price available if you were to sell them. You can’t see that gap from an asking price.

We don’t publish a complete purchase-price list, and that is part of our education-first approach. An asking price alone cannot show the same-day buyback value, the whole transaction or the support available years later. So our Order Desk explains each asset’s purchase price and same-day buyback price before the recorded order confirmation. You hear both numbers while the decision is still yours to make. Duncan’s five-star Trustpilot review of Augusta Precious Metals, from April 2026, reads: “Customer service is outstanding and pricing is simple and transparent.”

An online cart can serve cash purchases well. For an IRA, the test is whether the exact order can be completed at the displayed price and quantity, what custodian and depository steps follow, and what support exists after the purchase. We intentionally put one-on-one education and exact-asset pricing ahead of a self-service cart.

Put the same test to American Hartford Gold, Goldco, Birch Gold Group, Noble Gold Investments and us. Ask each one for the purchase price and same-day buyback price of every product before you agree to buy. Then read the terms that govern each figure a company posts.

Who advises you at a gold IRA company, and how are they paid?

At Augusta Precious Metals, our educators are salaried and do not earn sales commissions, so their pay does not depend on which coin or bar you choose. Our education team is led by Devlyn Steele, Director of Education, who personally designed our free one-on-one web conference.

Why ask about pay at all? Pay alone doesn’t settle anyone’s conduct. It does tell you what the person across the table is rewarded for.

The web conference is information. It covers how the account works, its costs, eligibility and how a sale works. Setup, funding, product selection and the Order Desk confirmation come later, in their own steps.

Scott left Augusta Precious Metals five stars on Trustpilot in February 2025: “Professional, Knowledgeable, Courteous and above all Patience. Dianne was terrific and Amber has the patience of Job. Made a tedious task (paper work) pleasant. Never tried to sell me a thing unlike another company I’ve used. Glad I chose APM. A+ all around.”

For any company you compare, find out three things. Who is named as the person teaching you? How is that person paid? When does the sales conversation begin?

What does a gold IRA cost beyond the annual account fee?

We charge none of the standard account fees; the independent custodian and depository charge them.

Account fees are one part of the cost. Total cost also includes product pricing, the spread and any charges for selling or distributing the metals. Say, hypothetically, you put $89,000 into metals. Every figure in the table is hypothetical and describes no dealer’s prices.

Hypothetical starting spreadSame-day bid on $89,000Same-day gap
3% spread$86,330$2,670
8% spread$81,880$7,120
13% spread$77,430$11,570

On that hypothetical $89,000 purchase, five additional percentage points of starting spread mean $4,450 of additional same-day resale gap. Standard annual custody and storage run in the hundreds of dollars. A covered fee is welcome, and it leaves the price of the metal exactly where it was. That is why the price and same-day bid for each asset come first in any comparison.

Rick gave Augusta Precious Metals five stars in a May 2024 Trustpilot review: “Presentation was very thorough and transparent. In talking with other Gold IRA companies, it was difficult getting a straight answer with regards to spreads, commissions and fees. That was not the case with AGM”

How does a gold IRA company buy your metals back?

At Augusta Precious Metals, a buyback starts with the private, product-specific valuation of your exact metals. If you decide to sell and we agree to repurchase, the Buyback Desk gives live pricing for the specific assets and quantities, confirms the agreed transaction on a recorded call and completes the required purchase-order documentation.

A valuation is informational and nonbinding; it is not a locked trade or a bid. The live bid on the day you sell sets the result, and that bid can be lower than what you paid. Since 2012, we have never declined a customer buyback request; this is not a guarantee of a future price.

Buyback terms differ from company to company, so read each one’s own wording. American Hartford Gold’s published Shipping and Transaction Agreement states: “Because applicable laws currently prohibit AHG from guaranteeing to repurchase precious metals it sells, AHG makes no such guarantee, either as to actual repurchase or as to repurchase at a particular price.” (American Hartford Gold, 2026)

What happens to metal we buy back? The Augusta Dealer Network is the system of buyers, holders, sellers, inventory and resale channels we use to buy back and resell specific assets. Our regular repurchases focus on our own customers, and customer purchasing has historically run ahead of buybacks. We keep a focused list of products. So when a customer sells a product other customers buy, selected metals we repurchase may be resold to incoming customers, while others are sold into the broader dealer market. Placing metal with another customer may reduce inventory holding, hedging and the need for a hurried outside sale, which supports a competitive bid, though the amount offered still depends on the exact asset, quantity and market at the time.

Within that system, Augusta targets a 5% spread for qualifying structured transactions, in accordance with the terms of the Augusta Transaction Agreement (Augusta Precious Metals, 2026). Qualifying transactions include eligible partial IRA distributions, RMDs and cash transactions under the agreement; immediate full liquidation is treated differently.

Service at the exit is where trouble can show. A one-star BBB review dated May 4, 2026, filed about Goldco, another gold IRA company, reads: “I started to take my distribution 3-25-26. Its 5-4-26 and still nothing. I bought 1025 oz of silver but they say i only have 1014 oz. No one will answer my questions. They play pass the * *** had this investment for over 3 years.” That is one customer’s allegation. It is also the exact moment to ask any company about before you buy.

The Augusta Highest Buyback Price Guarantee permits cancellation requests when a customer receives a qualifying higher bid within the program’s 24-hour window, under its written terms. The outside offer has to meet the guarantee’s comparison and documentation requirements, and the guarantee sets no future resale value for any metal.

Why choose Augusta Precious Metals for your gold IRA?

Customers also receive account lifetime support, including help with questions, valuations, distributions, and an eventual sale.

When you do sell, we coordinate an accepted buyback with the custodian and depository, while the custodian separately handles any cash distribution to you. Each party keeps its own role, and you know who does what.

Ira’s September 2025 ConsumerAffairs review of Augusta Precious Metals carried five stars: “A process that could well have been traumatic was indeed very nice. It was well thought out to give me maximum knowledge with minimum output on my part. I have never encountered a company that won’t sell me anything until I have been presented with the knowledge to enable me to rationally approach the buying of gold and silver (have you?). Counterintuitive to any business rational used by almost all companies!”

From January 2026, a five-star ConsumerAffairs review of Augusta Precious Metals by Jerry says: “Smooth and positive experience. I did a lot of research to find the right precious metals IRA, and I decided on Augusta. The process was smooth and I felt a transparency with Augusta that I didn’t find with the other companies I researched.”

Frequently asked questions

Will Augusta Precious Metals compare its live prices with another dealer’s offer?

Yes. The team can compare live prices with other dealers’ comparable offers during our guided education and Order Desk process, when the comparison fits. The Order Desk reviews the exact purchase prices and same-day buyback values before you choose a mix. For any posted figure from another company, read the terms that govern it.

Do you have to sell your metals back to the company you bought them from?

No. Augusta does not charge a separate dealer liquidation fee. Equity Trust, the custodian, charges a $30 processing fee for buybacks. Customers are never required to sell their metals back to Augusta and remain free to keep them, sell a portion, or seek another buyer.

Does Augusta Precious Metals charge a fee to buy metals back?

We don’t. The charge on a buyback comes from Equity Trust, the custodian. The standard account fees, charged by the independent custodian and depository, are a separate line from the metals and from the spread.

Does the one-on-one web conference quote the price of your metals?

No. The web conference is education on the account, its costs, eligibility and how a sale works. The Order Desk explains the purchase price and same-day buyback bid for each exact asset and quantity before an order.

Where can you check a gold IRA company’s record for yourself?

Start with the Better Business Bureau profile, where Augusta Precious Metals has an A+ BBB rating and has been accredited since February 17, 2015 (Better Business Bureau, 2026). BBB describes its ratings as its opinion of how a business is likely to interact with customers. The CFTC notes that retail metal dealers are not regulated at the federal level and points buyers to their state’s attorney general or securities regulator for a dealer’s complaint history (CFTC, 2024).
