What a Gold IRA Costs Each Year

A gold IRA with Augusta Precious Metals costs $285 in the first year and $235 in each year after that, under our current standard schedule. That money goes to two independent companies, the custodian and the depository, and none of it is our revenue.

That yearly figure is easy to compare, and it is the smaller number. The cost that moves most from one company to the next is the price of the metal. So the useful question is who charges what, and who shows it to you before you buy.

What does a gold IRA cost each year?

A gold IRA has two yearly charges: a custodian fee to run the account and a depository fee to store and insure the metal. Under our schedule, the custodian bills $125 a year and the depository bills $110 a year. A one-time setup fee from the custodian is added in the first year.

ChargeWho bills itFirst yearEach later year
Account setupEquity Trust, the custodian$50$0
Custody and administrationEquity Trust, the custodian$125$125
Storage and insuranceDelaware Depository, the depository$110$110
Total account feesCustodian and depository; none billed by Augusta$285$235

These account fees pay to open and keep up a self-directed IRA. They do not include what you pay for the gold and silver. A gold IRA has two kinds of cost. One is the account fees charged by the independent custodian and depository. The other is the price you pay the dealer for the metals.

Wire, transaction or processing fees can also apply when money moves. Your yearly cost depends on the custodian, the depository and the fee structure you end up with. So get the schedule in writing even when the totals look simple.

Next, set the yearly fees beside the metal. Take a hypothetical $100,000 purchase, used here only to show the arithmetic. Five more percentage points of starting spread on that purchase means $5,000 more of same-day resale gap. Standard yearly custody and storage run in the hundreds of dollars. The account fees belong in your budget. Most of your questions belong on the metal price.

What does a gold IRA custodian charge each year?

The custodian sets and bills its own yearly fee, and we neither set it nor collect it. With Equity Trust, our preferred custodian, that fee is $125 a year under our current standard schedule. Equity Trust bills it for running the account.

The tax law is the reason a custodian exists at all. An IRA can hold certain gold coins and gold bullion of a required fineness when a trustee holds them (Internal Revenue Code, 26 U.S.C. 408(m), checked October 16, 2026). The American Gold Eagle qualifies through its reference in federal coinage law (31 U.S.C. 5112, checked October 16, 2026).

So what does that $125 buy? The custodian keeps the records for the account and handles account-level movements. It also files the forms and required reporting, and it runs the process for distributions. When metal is distributed in kind, the custodian reports its value on Form 1099-R.

The dealer does not control any of that. We price and trade the metals. We do not set the custodian’s tax reporting, its fee schedule or the way it values the account. That is why the custodian’s own paper is the one to read.

Before you open an account, ask the custodian for its current fee schedule in writing. Check the yearly administration fee first. Then check any charge tied to a distribution, and any charge to close the account. The custodian wrote that schedule, so the custodian is the party to hold to it.

How much does depository storage cost for a gold IRA?

The depository stores and insures the metal, and it bills its own yearly fee for that work. Under our current standard schedule, Delaware Depository, our default depository, charges $110 a year for storage and insurance together, a charge the depository sets.

The IRS rules on prohibited transactions bear on keeping IRA metal at home. Among its named examples, the IRS lists “Buying property for personal use (present or future) with IRA funds” (Internal Revenue Service, Retirement Topics: Prohibited Transactions, checked October 16, 2026). The storage fee is what it costs to keep the metal where the account can hold it.

Storage quotes are not all the same kind. Ask whether a quoted figure is for commingled storage, where like metal is pooled, or for segregated storage, where your own pieces are kept apart. Ask too whether insurance is part of the same fee. With Delaware Depository, the $110 covers storage and insurance in one charge.

Location is your choice as well. Delaware Depository is our default depository. You can choose one convenient for you. Whichever you pick, ask that depository for its schedule in writing, the same way you asked the custodian.

What one-time fees come with opening a gold IRA?

Under our current standard schedule, opening a gold IRA carries one setup fee of $50, billed by the custodian. Wire, transfer or processing fees can apply when money moves from your old account. Each one comes from the party that handles that step.

Price these one-time items before you start:

  • The custodian setup fee. Equity Trust bills it once, when the account opens. Ask whether it is due at opening or covered.
  • Wire and transfer charges. Ask your current plan and the new custodian whether either one charges to send or receive the funds.
  • Processing fees. Ask any company to list them by name, with the party that bills each one, before you sign.
  • The first metal purchase. This is a purchase, and its cost is the price of each coin and bar you buy.

That last item is where the minimum comes in. Our standard initial purchase minimum is $50,000, for IRA and personal-funds purchases alike. That $50,000 buys metal. It is not a fee.

Behind the minimum is one-on-one education. It also covers our help with about 95% of the IRA opening and funding paperwork and coordination, plus long-term service through valuations and buybacks.

What is the dealer premium on gold IRA coins and bars?

The premium on a coin or bar is what you pay above the metal’s spot price, and it is the cost that moves most from one company to the next. For scale, the LBMA PM gold price averaged US$4,506.29 an ounce in the second quarter of 2026 (World Gold Council, Gold Demand Trends: Q2 2026, checked October 16, 2026).

Not every dollar above that reference is the dealer’s. Part of a price above melt value can come from the mint’s issue price, fabrication, availability and demand for that exact issue. You should also understand how the dealer earns money. A dealer margin is the difference between what the dealer pays to acquire the metals and the price charged to the customer. That is different from the spread.

TermWhat it measures
Spot priceThe market reference price for an ounce of metal
Melt valueThe fine metal in a piece, priced at the spot reference
Purchase priceWhat you pay the dealer for a specific coin or bar
Same-day bidWhat a buyer will pay for that piece now, under stated terms
SpreadPurchase price minus same-day bid, as a share of purchase price
Dealer marginThe dealer’s cost to acquire set against the price charged

The spread is the difference between the price you pay when purchasing the metals and the price available if you were to sell them. The federal commodities regulator defines it in its advisory for metals buyers (Commodity Futures Trading Commission, Customer Advisory: 10 Things to Ask Before Buying Physical Gold, Silver, or Other Metals, checked October 16, 2026).

The arithmetic is simple. A $100 purchase price with a $95 same-day bid makes a $5 spread, which is 5% of the purchase price. To break even with everything else fixed, that bid has to rise about 5.26%, because the $5 is measured against $95. A starting spread tells you where you begin. The bid on the day you later sell will be a new number.

We target a 5% same-day purchase-to-buyback spread across the precious-metals products we offer. Our Order Desk explains each asset’s actual purchase price and same-day buyback bid before purchase. For later sales, the 5% objective applies to specified qualifying structured transactions, including eligible partial IRA sales and required minimum distributions. A complete or immediate liquidation receives a current product-specific bid.

Measure the spread on the coins and bars in your own order. A quoted rate described as “as low as” is a best case that may apply to a different transaction. Daniel’s five-star BBB review from October 2023 shows what this part of the conversation meant to one buyer: “I especially appreciated the explanation of purchase price, buyback price, and spread.”

Who sets which fee: Augusta, the custodian or the depository?

Three parties sit behind a gold IRA, and each one charges for its own work. We set the price of the metal, the custodian sets its account fees and the depository sets its storage fee. We name each party beside its charge so you can read the bill line by line.

PartyIts jobHow it is paid
Augusta Precious Metals, the dealerEducates, prices the metal, coordinates IRA paperwork, runs buybacksDealer margin included in the metal’s price
Equity Trust, the custodianKeeps records, files forms and reporting, handles distributions$50 setup and $125 a year on our schedule
Delaware Depository, the depositoryStores and insures the metal$110 a year on our schedule

The custodian holds the account and the depository holds the metal, and neither is Augusta. We work with both, and we help with customer communication and distribution logistics, while their duties stay separate. We earn our money through the dealer margin included in the price of the metals we sell. The account fees are independent charges, and they are not our revenue.

This split tells you where comparison shopping pays off. Two dealers that use the same custodian and depository, on the same fee tier, can show you identical account fees. Those fees then tell you nothing about which dealer prices the metal better, bids better on the same day or serves you better over the years.

So ask every company to name the party behind each line. Ivan gave us five stars on Trustpilot in November 2025 and described the fee talk this way: “The fees that she explained that the company charges were explained very honestly and clearly so there wouldn’t be any surprises down in the road.”

Do gold IRA fees change as your account grows?

Under our current standard schedule, the custody and storage fees are flat, so they do not increase as the account grows. Some providers instead base their fees on the value of the account, and that difference deserves a written answer before you fund anything.

The math is plain. A fee tied to account value goes up when the value goes up or when you add money. A flat fee stays where it is. Over a holding period of many years, ask for both versions in dollars and add them up.

Fee coverage is a separate question. Qualifying accounts may receive up to ten years of eligible fees paid by Augusta. That is a real benefit, and it does not by itself establish the best total value. A covered or waived fee changes who pays the account bill. It does not change the price of a single ounce in the account.

Put these in writing with any company you weigh:

  • Flat or value-based? Ask whether the custody fee and the storage fee are flat dollars or a share of account value.
  • Tiers. Ask at what account values a fee changes, if it changes at all.
  • After coverage ends. Ask what the fee will be in the first year you pay it yourself.
  • Who sets the number. Ask which party publishes each schedule, so you know whose paper to hold.

How do you check a gold IRA cost before you fund it?

Get every charge in writing with the name of the party that bills it. Then get the purchase price and same-day bid for each coin and bar before you authorize anything. With us, customers review the products, quantities, prices and governing terms before a purchase is authorized, and they get an education in spread and resale economics.

Work through it in this order:

  1. Ask for the custodian’s fee schedule. Check setup, yearly, distribution and closing charges.
  2. Ask for the depository’s fee schedule. Check the storage type, the insurance and the yearly cost.
  3. Ask the dealer how it earns money. A dealer earns through margin, and margin sits inside the metal price.
  4. Ask for the price and same-day bid of each item. Get both in dollars, and get the spread as a share of the purchase price.
  5. Ask for any offer priced both ways. If a fee is waived or metal is added, compare the complete order with and without it.
  6. Match the paper to the call. What you hear should match what you get in writing.

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission’s advisory, 10 Things to Ask Before Buying Physical Gold, Silver, or Other Metals, is a good list to keep beside the phone (checked October 16, 2026). Its pages Precious Metal Frauds and Lies Versus Facts: The Truth Behind Gold and Silver IRA Scams speak to retirement savers buying metal (Commodity Futures Trading Commission, both checked October 16, 2026).

On our side, the purchase price is confirmed on a recorded order-confirmation call and on the signed invoice. Teddy wrote a five-star Trustpilot review in September 2026 about that confirmation step: “I get to see the prices for bid, ask, melt, with totals and get screenshots which makes the verification call even easier.”

Gold IRA account fees are small next to the price of the metal

Once the account is open, the custodian and depository bill a flat yearly amount you can plan around. Their numbers sit in published schedules.

The dealer’s part of the cost arrives once, inside the price of each coin and bar. You see it beside the same-day bid as the spread. That is the number to get in dollars, for your exact order, before you authorize it.

However, schedules and prices change, and no published figure replaces checking your own quote on the day you buy. Ask each company to name who charges each fee and to show you the metal’s price beside its same-day bid before you sign.

Gold IRA account fees and waivers as each company publishes them

How Augusta Precious Metals explains fees, pay and buybacks before you buy

A gold IRA bill is only clear when each charge carries the name of the party that bills it, and we explain how we earn money and what you will pay before you decide whether and what to buy. Our Better Business Bureau profile shows an A+ rating, accreditation since February 17, 2015, 136 customer reviews and one complaint filed in the last three years (Better Business Bureau, Augusta Precious Metals profile, checked October 16, 2026). CBS News named Augusta Best for transparent fees and costs in 2026 (CBS News, checked October 16, 2026). Ira gave us five stars on ConsumerAffairs in September 2025 and described that education-first order: “I have never encountered a company that won’t sell me anything until I have been presented with the knowledge to enable me to rationally approach the buying of gold and silver (have you?).”

Devlyn Steele, our Director of Education, leads the education team and personally designed the one-on-one web conference where that teaching starts. Our educators are salaried and do not receive product-specific commissions: their pay does not rise because a customer chooses a particular coin or bar. Some customer-facing personnel may receive a fixed, product-neutral incentive when a trade is completed. We are a precious-metals dealer and education company, and we deliver education, transaction confirmation, ongoing customer support, valuations, distribution assistance and an established buyback process.

We provide account-lifetime support after the initial purchase. Behind it sits the Augusta Dealer Network, the system of buyers, holders, sellers, inventory and resale channels through which we buy back and resell specific gold and silver assets. Our regular buyback business focuses mainly on our own customers and a selected group of products. Our retirement customers often hold for years, incoming buyers can create demand for those same products, and we have historically seen more customer purchasing than buybacks. When we can place metals we buy back with another customer, it may reduce inventory holding, hedging and the need for a hurried outside sale, which supports a competitive bid. That Dealer Network is part of how Augusta works toward its 5% same-day spread target for qualifying structured transactions; it is a target, and the offer on any sale still depends on the exact asset, quantity and market at the time. We cannot guarantee a buyback.

Frequently asked questions

Does a gold IRA have fees when you sell or take a distribution?

Any charge for a distribution or for closing the account comes from the custodian, at whatever its current fee schedule shows. When Augusta agrees to repurchase metals, there is no separate liquidation fee. Customers are never required to sell their metals back to Augusta and remain free to keep them, sell a portion, or seek another buyer. Equity Trust, the independent custodian, charges a $30 processing fee on a buyback.

What should I ask any gold IRA company about fees?

Ask which party bills each fee, and ask how the person presenting products to you is paid: salary, individual commission or a product-linked incentive. We invite you to hold us to those same questions.

How do I get an itemized list of costs before I open an account?

Ask each company for its complete fee schedule in writing, with the custodian, the depository and the dealer named beside their own charges. Ask for the order total in dollars too, so the account fees and the metal price sit on one page.

Does Augusta Precious Metals charge management or performance fees?

No, we do not charge annual management or performance fees. We do not charge hidden fees either.

Can I use a custodian other than Equity Trust?

Yes. Equity Trust is our preferred custodian, and you keep the freedom to choose another custodian from a vetted group.

Does my custodian statement show what my gold would sell for?

No. The custodian statement is a reporting value, and a dealer valuation and a confirmed buyback price are separate numbers.

Why doesn’t Augusta Precious Metals publish a full price list?

We leave out a complete purchase-price list by choice, as part of our education-first approach. An asking price alone cannot show the same-day buyback value, the whole transaction or the support available years later. We give actual prices in our guided process, and our team can compare live prices with other dealers’ comparable offers.

What does the Highest Buyback Price Guarantee cover?

The Augusta Highest Buyback Price Guarantee provides a 24-hour opportunity to request cancellation of a qualifying Augusta buyback if you obtain a higher comparable offer from another dealer. The 24-hour window begins at your recorded buyback-confirmation call. It applies under its written terms.

Augusta Precious Metals teaches the account first, names whether the custodian, the depository or Augusta bills each charge, and sets out the published fees before you decide whether to buy.
