American Eagle 1-oz Gold is struck by the US Mint from gold mined exclusively in the United States. The obverse adapts Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ iconic Liberty design from the $20 gold piece, with Lady Liberty striding forward and the date shown in Roman numerals from 1986 to 1991, then Arabic numerals since. The reverse features Miley Busiek’s bald eagle landing in a family nest — a design that distinguishes it from the soaring eagles common to other sovereign coins.

Each coin is 22 karat, with a small addition of other metal for durability, but contains one full troy ounce of pure gold. The US government guarantees its content, weight, and purity. Augusta prices this coin at an amount over melt value — see Pricing & Resale Disclosure below for full details.

FAQs about American Eagle 1-oz Gold

What does "melt value" mean for a gold coin like this?
Melt value is the coin's gold content multiplied by the current spot price of gold — the baseline metal value before Augusta's amount over melt is added. For a 1-oz coin, that's straightforwardly the current per-ounce spot price of gold, making it one of the easier coins to track against daily market prices.
What does the US government guarantee on American Eagle 1-oz Gold?
The United States guarantees the coin's gold content, weight, and purity — meaning each coin is backed by the federal government to contain exactly one troy ounce of pure gold. That guarantee is a primary reason American Eagles are among the most widely traded gold bullion coins in the world and are accepted by dealers almost anywhere.
Is American Eagle 1-oz Gold eligible for a precious metals IRA?
Yes. American Eagle gold coins are specifically permitted in self-directed precious metals IRAs under IRS rules — one of the few gold coins with an explicit statutory exception. Many retirement investors use them as a core gold holding precisely because their eligibility and US government backing simplify custodian due diligence.
Why do American Eagles typically carry higher amounts over melt than generic gold bars?
The US government guarantee, global dealer recognition, and long track record since 1986 make American Eagles easier to verify, buy, and sell across a wider range of markets than generic bars. Many investors accept the higher amount over melt specifically because that recognition tends to support smoother resale and broader dealer participation over time.
